What is love? This is a question that people feel they know the answer to, but still perceive it differently based on individual culture. Religion say, “It’s God!” The philosopher say, “It’s the highest level of understanding!” The spiritual say, “It’s the opposite of self!” Your love one say, “It’s how you make me feel!” What if we combined these perceptions and came to one big conclusion? I won’t be bias today and give you my personal opinion, I will remain arbitrary on this subject… for now!
Religion tells you love is (According to the American Heritage Dictionary): God’s benevolence and Mercy toward man and Man’s devotion to or adoration of God. The Qur’an describes Allah as Al-Rahman (the Benevolent) and Al-Raheem (the Merciful). The Bible name three types of love from Greek mythology: Eros, Philos, Agape. Eros is the desire, lust or sexual yearning for another… but is that love? Philos expose love as dear or fond of or tending to in a productive manner. That kind of love is action or seen, or doing for, but is that love? Then there is Agape, the total love, the love that devours those that experience it. Whoever knows and experiences Agape sees that nothing else in this world is of any importance, only loving. This was the love that Jesus felt for humanity, and it was so great that it shook the stars and changed the history of man.
Philosophy will ask: Why Love is the Highest Form of Knowledge? There are two kinds of knowledge: primary reflection and secondary reflection. Primary reflection is essentially signal response. Animals are capable of this. Humans have this kind of knowledge as well. Secondary reflection is knowledge performed by a self-conscious being that can say “I.” Self-consciousness allows for concept formation, which in turn makes language possible. This kind of knowledge is an immaterial act, since the reception of a concept is not reception of a material thing. Yet it only begins when one loves another. Only love opens one to the revelation of the other as person. Without love, the other is only immaterial impersonal object, not immaterial personal object. Love alone reveals the other as ultimately unknowable on a complete level without trust and commitment. Love reveals and understands the personhood of the other.
The spiritual, looks at love outside of self in the form of all of us are one. “If I don’t love you I don’t love myself!” is the words in their tongue. “We all connected, we just can’t see the glue,” may define it best. If faith is the evidence of the unseen, their must be trust, and trust is love, where the people will follow the prophesy of a prophet of a greater tomorrow for all! The the love people has for Martin, Malcom, Obama, John F Kennedy, KKK Americans for Trump! The sacrifice for a greater outcome for the greater whole.
After all this perception of love, I boiled it down to the cognitive subconscious of the “fight or flight mechanism” of when a person is put in a certain predicament. The baby innocently goes walking into the street of moving traffic and daddy leaps without a thought UNCONSCIOUSLY! The officer brutally beats a man and big brother goes and fight the officer off, not giving two flying fucks that he will be sleeping in jail that night… or killed! An Australian farmer sees his pet dog being attacked by a wild Kangaroo and punches him it in the face. What is love? Okay, fuck being arbitrary, I’m one sided on my own side. It’s ultimate freedom once you combine all perceptions of love. Freedom from fear, anger and disappear. Freedom of pain, misery and cynical thoughts that block you from moving forward. Love is the outcome of when it’s all said and done and God, Allah or Earth gives you the experience of Heaven!
